Staging Site Warnings can be enabled on a production site to warn users that their changes may be overwritten when the staging site is pushed live. When enabled, a staging site will sync its status with the production site every hour / one daily / twice daily.
Before cloning a Production site to staging you should configure the warning messages and provide details for the user account used by the sync status process (this is covered further down).
“Enable Staging Warnings” is the global on / off for any warnings on the Production site.
In the “Admin Bar Warning” section you can toggle the warning to be shown (this is an extra visual reminder in the admin area), and customise the text and background colour.
Below that you can customise the “Login Screen Warning” message. When enabled a notice displaying the warning will be shown above the login box.
For the Staging to Production sync to work securely an admin user is required (due to options being updated). This involves creating a new admin user account and application password.
Click the “Auto Create Sync User” button to automate this creation and to populate the details in the form.
Important: If your staging site already exists you will be able to application password before it is hidden. Replicate the changes on your staging site so both match.
Enter your Production site URL and save the settings.
Enabling the Staging site warning: On your staging site you can check the “Staging Site Active” option and click save settings. This will instantly send a message to the Production site that Staging is now actively being used. Refresh an admin page on the Production site or visit its login screen to confirm the warning is showing up.
Disabling the Staging site warning: After pushing the Staging site to Production, log in to Staging and uncheck the “Staging Site Active” setting and save changes. Repeat this on your Production site.
