Catch the words that shouldn’t be there: Content integrity monitoring for client sites
Every web agency knows the feeling – a client calls because someone noticed a typo that’s been sitting on their homepage for months, or worse, a hacked site is quietly serving up pharma spam to visitors while the dashboard looks perfectly green.
Routine crawls catch broken links and missing images. But what about the words themselves?
Flagging words that don’t belong
Website Toolkit now includes a Content Integrity word monitoring feature. During each crawl, every page’s visible text is tokenised and checked against a per-site word list. Words that have never appeared on the site before surface automatically for review – you approve the ones that are fine and flag the ones that aren’t.
Once a word is flagged as Warn, every future crawl will report exactly which pages it was found on. You get a clear, expandable list right in the results viewer:
“infomation — found on 2 pages ▶ [ourwebservices.co.uk/about/, ourwebservices.co.uk/our-services/]”
No hunting through pages manually. No waiting for a client to notice.
What it actually catches
- Typos and misspellings that have crept into page content, button labels, or navigation
- Pharma and casino spam injected by a compromised plugin or theme – common in WordPress sites that haven’t been updated
- Brand compliance issues – a former staff member’s name, an old product line, a discontinued service still mentioned somewhere
- Placeholder text – “Lorem ipsum” or “TBC” left behind after a content update
- Competitor names that shouldn’t appear in body copy
Offering it as a service
This kind of oversight is easy to position as a premium add-on to an existing maintenance package.
Standard maintenance tier – the crawler already runs on a schedule, catching broken links, SSL expiry, missing images, and page errors. Most clients are familiar with this kind of technical health check.
Enhanced content monitoring tier – add the word list review as an onboarding step: spend 30 minutes with the client agreeing on terms that should never appear on their site. Flag them once. Every crawl from that point forward will surface any violations automatically, with a direct link to the offending page.
The pitch is simple: we’re not just checking that your site is up – we’re checking that it’s saying the right things.
For clients in regulated industries, healthcare, finance, or education, this kind of assurance has real value. For everyone else, it’s the difference between finding out about a hacked site from a crawler report versus finding out from a client’s customer.
Getting started
The Words tab in the results viewer shows every unique word the crawler has encountered across the site. New words appear automatically after each crawl. From there:
- Review the New words list after the first crawl and approve anything legitimate
- Warn any word that should never appear – misspellings, spam terms, discontinued products
- Every subsequent crawl will flag any page where a warned word is found and list the exact URLs
The flagged word list is per-site, so each client has their own tailored oversight rules built up over time.
It won’t replace a full security audit. But it will mean a hacked site pumping out casino links gets caught at the next scheduled crawl – not six months later.
