Why this matters
A well maintained WordPress site is a vital part of good website governance. But what happens if administration emails don’t make it to a knowledgeable person? Or worse, they reach the right person, but they no longer have the required access to maintain the site?
Over the years many site maintainers have been stuck receiving emails from ex-client sites as their admin user was removed from the site, but the administration email address was not changed. You could set up an email rule to filter out these emails, but you shouldn’t have to receive them in the first place.
In other situations the administration email address was a distribution group, which doesn’t match up to active admin user accounts.
With ToggleWP protecting your interests, you’ve taken several additional steps to ensure you’ll still have access to a site you are responsible for.
What it does
It replaces the free text Administration Email Address field with a selection of eligible administrator users, prevents that user account from being deleted (via the UI), or having its role downgraded.
Should your client migrate their site away from you without notice the above safety measures should prevent unplanned loss of site access and unnecessary emails.
As an extra safety measure, once a month the selected administrator will receive an email with a single use link. Clicking it will notify all other site admins that you wish for your user’s email address to no longer be the administrator email address.
Each time an admin logs in to the site they will be shown a dashboard notice until a replacement user has been selected. They will also be shown a simple pop up and taken to Settings > General each time they log in.
How to set it up
Go to Settings > General and check that your email address is the one listed. If your user’s email address matched the existing administration email address there is nothing you need to do.
